In a recent development, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, was sent to judicial custody until September 23 by the Vijayawada ACB court. This decision comes in connection with an alleged skill development scam.

Naidu is expected to be transferred to the Rajahmundry Central Prison. His arrest took place on Saturday by the Andhra Pradesh CID, concerning a purported scam amounting to Rs 371 crore within the AP Skill Development Corporation.

According to the CID’s investigation, in 2015, the skill development corporation entered into an agreement with Siemens for a project worth Rs 3,300 crore aimed at providing skill training. The state government was supposed to contribute 10% of this amount as its share. However, Siemens allegedly failed to fulfil its part and instead utilized government funds.

Additionally, the CID has raised suspicions that a portion of the funds was funnelled into shell companies. In their remand report, they assert that the primary beneficiaries of this alleged scam include the Telugu Desam Party, Naidu himself, and the former Minister for Labor and Skill Development, K Atchennaidu.

Naidu’s arrest was accompanied by dramatic scenes as a significant number of TDP (Telugu Desam Party) supporters gathered at his campsite in Nandyal and in Vijayawada, where he was brought to court for his appearance. TDP workers attempted to obstruct his convoy along the way.

A team of CID officials, led by DIG Kolli Raghuram Reddy, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT), arrived at Naidu’s campsite in Nandyal, where he had spent the night on a bus. CID Deputy SP M. Dhanunjayudu served Naidu a notice under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to criminal conspiracy and cheating, as well as sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, in connection with the alleged misappropriation of public funds. After several hours of intense confrontations and disputes between the police and TDP leaders at the campsite, Naidu was taken into custody.
